Accelerating Innovation in Biosensors, Photonics & Opto-Electronics with our High Performance Graphene

We are constantly engaging with partners and undertaking joint development projects with large and small customers around the globe. Our in-house knowledge and integration insights span a variety of applications such as biosensors or photonics applications. As a result, we understand how best to integrate our materials for these applications.

ANL can help with proof of concept, product development, scaling towards engineering volumes and post-production processes.

our high performance graphene is already available in a diverse field of BEOL applications such as biosensors, photonics and opto-electronics

Biosensors
Graphene biosensors have shown a limit of detection in the attomolar range and can span a range of around six orders of magnitude, providing accurate results in less than one minute. Many publications have demonstrated the effectiveness of these sensors. Since mid 2020, for example, more than 10 papers have shown how the technology can be applied in detecting SARS-CoV-2 mRNA.

ANL provides generic and custom-made biosensors, enabling our business partners and customers to make these biosensors specific to a certain biomarker such as a virus, bacterium, protein, or other biomolecule.

Gas sensors
Graphene’s unique physical properties enable it to be used in detecting different types of gases at extremely low concentrations. As with the biosensors, ANL can provide both generic and custom-made gas sensors that can be functionalized for the detection of a specific gas.

Magnetic sensors
Graphene has a large Hall effect, where a magnetic field produces a change in the flow of electrical charges through a conductor. This makes it ideally suited to act as a sensitive magnetic sensor with a large range, having applications in industries from automotive to medical.

Thin membrane pressure and audio applications
Because flexing a graphene membrane changes its physical properties, such membranes can be used in ultra-sensitive pressure sensors, or in high-frequency audio microphones and speakers. As graphene membranes are transparent, they can also function as strong but extremely lightweight windows for X-ray, ultraviolet or infrared applications and in electron microscopes.

IR imaging
Graphene can sense light in a very broad spectrum from ultraviolet to far infrared, whether for industrial applications or in widely used sensors such as those in smartphones. Graphene can also be enhanced by using quantum dots (tiny solid state semiconductor devices, acting as single electron transistors) to obtain a much higher sensitivity for a required spectrum. Graphene has a very low noise contribution and enables high sensitivity.

Photonics
Graphene can act as a transducer on an optical waveguide to modulate or sense infrared light at ultra-high speeds and with low power consumption. Graphene-based photonics have the potential to replace existing datacenter technology.

Epitaxial growth
When graphene is transferred onto a monocrystalline wafer, it is possible to grow another thin film of the original monocrystalline material above it. The graphene acts as a separation layer and the grown thin film can be delaminated and transferred to another wafer. In this way, a wide range of thin film semiconductor materials (InP, GaAs, SiGe, SiC,…) can be integrated onto standard wafers, adding functionality without abandoning existing CMOS technology.
